Riding for the Disabled

Tess Hardy, M.B.E. is proprietor of Pakefield Riding School and Chair of Lowestoft Riding for the Disabled group.

The riding school actively promotes inclusivity and offers access to clients with wide range of additional needs seven days a week.

Pakefield Riding School was established by Tess in 1946 and has been a member of the British Horse Society (BHS) since 1969, Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS) since 1991 and a registered Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Centre for over 50 years.

As part of regulatory controls the riding school must be inspected annually and we repeatedly achieve the highest award of 5 stars with East Suffolk council.

All our staff have enhanced DBS checks, current equine and paediatric first aid at work, riding and road safety and most staff are either British Horse Society (BHS), Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS) or Riding for the Disabled (RDA) qualified instructors.

Inclusivity and being client-focused is central to Lowestoft Riding for the Disabled group and we pride ourselves on our student’s excellent academic and personal outcomes. Over the years we have seen rider’s self-esteem and confidence grow and we work in collaboration with health professionals especially Occupational Therapists to help develop greater muscle strength, balance and fitness.

In November 2018 we were sponsored by the Wooden Spoon charity that supports children with disabilities, or facing disadvantage and they completed an extensive refurbishment of the indoor arena and spectator’s gallery, which has improved accessibility for all. Alongside this is a cosy lecture room and tack room where the children can meet at the beginning and end of each session.

We currently offer a range of recognised qualifications including the RDA Endeavour awards, ABRS and BHS tests, and will teach flexibly to best suit the individual client’s learning style.

We regularly support students to achieve their GCSE in sport. We are in discussions with Asdan and Gateway awarding bodies to obtain direct claim status to be able to deliver awards from Entry Level 1 to Level 1 to our suite of qualifications.

We work in partnership with schools, agreeing each student’s personal aspirations and how we can support in delivering agreed educational outcomes. The student’s progress is mapped against the assessment criteria and will be assessed regularly in line with the awarding bodies.

We would welcome the opportunity to meet, or have a telephone conversation, to discuss whether Pakefield Riding School is suitable for you.
